Phase I - Lighting

Phase Priorities: The Phases have been organized so that you can do the least expensive improvements first. As you execute each of the Phases you will see you energy bills go down. As they go down that will give you more confidence and money to invest in the future Phases. You can move thru the Phases at your own pace. We strongly recommend that you do Phase I & Phase II as soon as possible. These Phases provide immediate savings any time of year. Also, you should do Phase III before the next cooling or heating season or right away if your in either one now. The other Phases are more expensive and more complicated to execute.

These Phases are defined here for residential. For businesses please go to Frontline Energies

Lighting: Here you can get the biggest bang for your buck. The energy savings are predictable and independent of the weather. So any time of year the savings start immediately after installation. Below is a top level overview of lighting efficiency. For more Lighting Efficiency details, please see our

Addressable Lighting: All of these lead to multifaceted benefits. In short you get better, more efficient lighting that is more reliable and cheaper to maintain.

  • Incandescents
  • Floodlights
  • Globe Lights
  • Fluorescent Fixtures (T8 & T12)
  • Hi-Bay & Outdoor Lighting - Metal Hallide, Mercury Vapor & High Pressure Sodium

Energy Efficiency Methods: These methods change the lighting, not the way you use it.

  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)
  • Cold Cathode Lamps (CCs)
  • Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)
  • T8 Lamps with Electronic Ballasts and possibly reflectors

Savings: The savings vary from about 50% to 90% for each fixture.

  • Depending on your specific house electric load this savings can translate to from 5% to 60% of your total electric bill.

Lighting Terminology: T# represents diameter is 1/8 inches.

  • T8 = 8/8 inch = 1 inch diameter
  • T12 = 12/8 inches = 1 1/2 inches diameter

Urgency: The regular CFLs are so good and so cheap (as in inexpensive) today that you should just go out and buy about 20 of them. Then put them whereever they fit. Spend the money later to buy the specialty bulbs such as Globes & Floods if you are unhappy with the look of these in certain places. When you are done and have everything the way you want it you can always give away your starter bulbs to light the fire for someone else. Just make sure you buy bulbs rated for 10,000 hour life and you should be happy with the results.
